School of Visual Arts has been a leader in the education of artists, designers and creative professionals for more than six decades. With a faculty of distinguished working professionals, a dynamic curriculum and an emphasis on critical thinking, SVA is a catalyst for innovation and social responsibility. Comprised of more than 6,000 students at its Manhattan campus and 35,000 alumni in 100 countries, SVA also represents one of the most influential artistic communities in the world. SVA is a college that requires the completion of a four-year, 120 credit course for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This includes 72 accumulated credits' worth of studio classes (where the curriculum requires the creation of some type of art), 30 accumulated credits of Humanities and Sciences courses, 12 accumulated credits of art history courses and 6 discretionary credits. A Master of Fine Arts degree requires completion of 60 credits and a thesis project, while a Master of Professional Studies degree requires 30 to 36 credits and a thesis project, depending on the program. A Master of Arts in Teaching degree requires the completion of 36 credits and a thesis project.

In 1983, the school introduced its first graduate offering, a master of Fine Arts program in painting, drawing and sculpture. Currently, SVA offers the following:
